Welcome to Charles Keidan’s World of Philanthropy

With two decades of experience as a foundation director, philanthropy editor, campaigner and advisor, we’re delighted to introduce Charles Keidan’s new English language column Give and Take.
Give and Take invites you to think differently about philanthropy, to take a broader view of where we’re going and inspire our field to shape society for the better.
Why Give and Take?
Well, capitalism is often associated with 'taking' and philanthropy with 'giving' or 'giving back'. 'Give and take' will explore the relationship – healthy or otherwise - between capitalism and philanthropy.
But is capitalism taking and philanthropy giving the full story? What about when acts of philanthropy benefit the giver, say to gain status, recognition, influence and power – or just feel good for giving something back.
Debate, dialogue and compromise are essential for a thriving democracy. We need more 'give and take'. At our best, that’s precisely what the worlds of journalism and philanthropy can offer – and what we need more of in the world of philanthropy.
